Overlooking clear Mediterranean waters in the foothills of verdant mountains, the golf courses on the French island of Corsica are bathed in a warm year-round climate. Here’s a quick tour.
With views of picturesque hilltop villages and vineyards, the courses here are natural and unpretentious, and the island’s standout 18-hole course is one of Europe’s most beautiful.
Golf De Sperone
Sperone Golf Club is located at the southern tip of Corsica, close to the town of Bonifacio with its lovely marina and medieval clifftop citadel. Designed by the great Robert Trent Jones, it’s the island’s only 18-hole layout. It has amazing views of the Mediterranean and a wild feel with scents of naturally growing lavender, thyme and rosemary. Its holes are some of the most beautiful in Europe including hole 16 which requires a drive over the crystal clear turquoise sea, along beaches past limestone cliffs. The clubhouse restaurant has stunning views.
Golf Club de Lezza
A few kilometres north of Golf De Sperone and just a few minutes by car from the charming city of Porto-Vecchio, Lezza Golf Club is a 9-hole, par 32 course nestled in oaks and olive trees with views of Santa Ghjulia Bay. It’s a pretty, hilly course that requires strategy and precision around the greens and there’s five par 3s, three par 4s and one par 5 measuring 528 yards. It’s a great place to practice your short game in particular. There’s a covered and illuminated practice area with 10 training stations, putting chipping greens, as well as a clubhouse with a pro shop, a bar, a restaurant and equipment rental.
Domaine de Murtoli
Murtoli Golf Links, just west of Golf Club de Lezza, is nested in untouched wild nature and was designed by famed architect Kyle Phillips. There’s 12 holes including 2 double greens, and the loop design offers multiple combinations so you can play the course as you wish. Holes range between between 120 and 539 yards in length which trail through gorgeous seaside and mountain scenery. The facilities include a full length practice fairway, green and bunkers, with unlimited balls.
Golf du Reginu
In the north of Corsica, Reginu Golf Club is a 9-hole course, 2060 yards in length. It’s natural and unpretentious and located in the middle of olive trees. It’s wooded and hilly with incredible mountain views. It’s modest and simple and run by a team of passionate golfers and the green fees are very affordable. There’s also covered driving stations, a bar and fast food on offer. It’s a great place for a quick and fun round in a naturally beautiful setting.
Giga Golf Club
This course, close to the international airport and the seaside resort of Porticcio, is only ten minutes from Ajaccio city centre on the west of the island. It’s flat and straight and allows you to have fun during a pressure-free round. It’s the perfect place for beginners. The golf course stretches just over 2000 yards with six holes and a driving range. A great place to learn the game while enjoying mountain views.
Le Borgo Golf Club
Borgo Golf Club is the oldest golf course in Corsica. Designed in the early eighties by Pierre Pancrazi, it’s located located in the north, 20 km south of Bastia. It’s a 9-hole layout in great condition made up of six par 4s and three par 3s. There’s enough interest for experienced players with a total of five water hazards and nine bunkers, but its a fantastic place for beginners to learn the game. There’s a proshop where you can book private and group lessons.
