The holidays don’t mean your clubs need to stay in the garage. If you’ve left your golf trip planning to the last minute, Europe still has a handful of spots where warm-ish winter sun, open fairways and festive cheer come together perfectly. Below we’ve picked the most reliable, playable and charming options — places where you can realistically find tee times, decent winter weather and a good mix of courses, resorts and off-course treats over Christmas.

Southern Portugal’s Algarve remains the classic winter-sun option for European golfers: a concentration of championship courses, short flight times from most of Western Europe and a golf season that rarely truly shuts down. The region hosts dozens of courses (estimates vary by source, but it’s well into the multiple-dozen range), including household names such as Vale do Lobo, Quinta do Lago, Monte Rei and San Lorenzo — all of which run winter tee-time programmes and stay surprisingly busy between late November and February. If you want a stable climate and plenty of choice for last-minute tee bookings, it’s hard to beat this stretch of coast.

Practical note: December daytime temperatures generally sit in the mid-teens Celsius, and courses can be quieter around the public holidays, so check for any reduced clubhouse hours — but many resorts combine golf with spa packages and festive menus, a nice balance if you’re bringing family who aren’t playing.

From Valderrama and Finca Cortesín in the west to the hotel-lined beaches near Málaga, the Costa del Sol is sometimes called Europe’s golfing playground. The region’s sheer density of quality courses and top-tier academies makes it ideal for a short, last-minute break: airport transfers are short, accommodation ranges from budget to five-star, and you can cram three very different rounds into a long weekend. The variety — parkland, links-style holes, and cliffside sea views — gives every round a different character.

Christmas tip: many clubs host special festive dinners and a quieter course experience at dawn or dusk. If you want the “big-name” courses (Valderrama, Finca Cortesín), book those tee times as soon as you lock flights — other courses are usually easier to secure last minute.

If warmth is your priority, the Canaries are a sensible last-minute pick: volcanic landscapes, ocean vistas and reliable winter sunshine make golf very pleasant in December. Tenerife and Gran Canaria host the majority of the islands’ courses, with resort courses like Abama (Tenerife) and a clutch of sea-view layouts on Gran Canaria and Lanzarote. Travel times from much of northern Europe are short (direct flights are frequent), and because the islands are popular for winter sun, many hotels keep golf-friendly services running through Christmas.

A practical advantage here is the ability to combine rounds with off-course activities that keep non-golfers happy: coastal walks, volcanic parks and excellent seafood restaurants.

Cyprus’s Paphos region is a pleasant winter golf option: mild days, well-maintained championship resorts and approachable travel logistics for many European cities. Aphrodite Hills, the island’s flagship, is a PGA-recognised course with resort facilities (hotel, restaurants, spa) and is designed to be playable most of the year — a good bet if you want a resort that handles everything for you at short notice. The weather in Paphos in December is typically cool but often sunny, with daytime highs frequently reaching the mid-teens Celsius.

Christmas note: Cyprus is also known for relaxed seasonal celebrations rather than intense holiday closures, so shops and restaurants around resort hubs generally stay open — useful when travelling at the last minute.

For golfers seeking a more tranquil and character-filled getaway, Sicily and Sardinia offer mild winter days, beautiful landscapes, and top-quality courses. Sicily’s Verdura Resort, with its sea-view fairways and championship layout, provides both challenging golf and luxury resort amenities. Sardinia’s Pevero Golf Club and other coastal courses feature stunning Mediterranean backdrops, from turquoise waters to rugged cliffs.

Tee times are generally easier to secure at this time of year, and off-course experiences — including local cuisine, charming towns, and historical sites — make these islands a memorable winter golf destination.

If you want guaranteed warmth and course density, the Algarve and the Costa del Sol are your safest bets. If you want the warmest, most reliable winter sun per distance from northern Europe, head to the Canary Islands. For a quieter, more resort-driven Christmas with easy travel logistics, Cyprus is a great alternative.
