Meet Steve Webster who played more than 500 European Tour events

Steve Webster had a long career on the European Tour. It all started when he won the Silver Medal for low amateur at the 1995 Open Championship beating no other player than Tiger Woods. In more than 500 starts on the European Tour, Steve managed to win the Open d’Italia in 2005 and the inaugural Portugal Masters in 2007.

So here we are interviewing Steve who lives in Dubai. We’re happy to share this exclusive interview on our blog.

How did your your professional career as a golfer start?

After winning the Silver Medal as the leading amateur at The Open Championship , I was determined to give it a try at Q-School the same year and I managed to win and qualify for the European Tour! Other notable qualifiers of that year (1995) include Angel Cabrera who won PQ1 at Quietwaters but was attempting to get through Qualifying School for the fourth time. Padraig Harrington was also giving it his first try and made it.

You have been on tour for more then 20 years, what was the most difficult part of your journey?

The most difficult part was to travel around the world and compete in 72-hole competitions week-in week-out. All my amateur tournaments were 36 holes, so playing 72 holes every week was a big change.

How do you see the golf industry evolve in the next 10 years?

I believe that golf all depends on Tiger – he is that big. What happens in the future will depend on his health.

If you could only play one golf course for the rest of your life, which course would it be and why?

Augusta of course! Everything is special about the place. There’s so much history and the course is immaculate!

What are your plans for the future?

I’d like to play partly on the European Tour, partly on Challenge Tour.
