Discover Te Arai Links: A New Landmark in New Zealand’s Golf Scene
Let’s take a look at what equipment exciting young talent Viktor Hovland is carrying in his golf bag. The 23-year-old has already won on the PGA Tour, at the Puerto Rico Open in February in only his 17th start.
The Norwegian signed a contract with Ping in June 2019 ahead of his professional debut at the Travellers Championship, but had already been playing with their equipment for three years.
On signing the deal, the current world #30 said: “The technology behind the equipment and the service they provide allows me to focus on getting better and not worrying about my equipment.“
Ping G410 LST (9 degrees @ 8.5; flat standard, CG shifter in draw)
Shaft: Project X HZRDUS Black 6.5 (44.5 inches, D3 swing weight)
Hovland said of the driver: “The G410 LST driver is a great fit for my game. It looks really good and I know I’m going to hit the centre of the face. It flies in the window I like and the spin is right for my game. I can swing with confidence off the tee knowing the results will be long and straight.”
TaylorMade M5 (15 degrees @ 14.5)
Shaft: Mitsubishi Tensei Blue AV 85 TX
He then carries a TaylorMade M5 fairway wood, the same club Tiger Woods carries in his golf bag.
Callaway X Forged UT (21 degrees), Ping i210 (4-PW)
Shafts: Graphite Design Tour AD DI-85 X Hybrid (21), KBS Tour 120 X (4-PW)
Hovland carries two different models of irons. He carries a Callaway X Forged UT with a Graphite Design shaft. The X Forged UT is a forged design with a 360 Face Cup. And then has Ping i210 irons from four-iron down to pitching wedge.
Hovland is known to tweak his irons set-up, depending on conditions. Prior to the Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village in July he wanted more launch and spin, so Ping removed four degrees of bounce from each club head. This helped him gain 1 degree of launch and roughly 150-200 RPMs of spin.
Ping Glide 3.0 (50, 56 (@55), 60)
Shafts: KBS Tour-V 130 X
Hovland carries three Ping Glide 3.0 wedges with 50, 56 (bent to 55), and 60 degrees of loft respectively.
Ping PLD Prototype ‘Hovi’
He had been using a TaylorMade TP Black Copper Mullen 2 DB SS putter, and a Ping Sigma 2 Wolverine H model before he changed to his current Ping PLD Prototype ‘Hovi’.
