The Els Club Vilamoura: Golfing Grandeur in the Algarve

Let’s take a look in the golf bag of newly crowned US Open champion Bryson DeChambeau. Known as ‘The Scientist’ for his unique approach to the game, the 26-year-old overpowered Winged Foot in New York and finished six shots ahead of the field.
All of the American’s irons and wedges are cut to exactly the same length: 37.5 inches (the length of a 7-iron). Their lie and bounce angle are also the same, with only the lofts being different. He also has graphite shafts in every club and uses extremely thick jumbo grips.

From late 2019 and through Covid-19 lockdown, DeChambeau purposely gained 45lbs in weight in order to increase his swing speed and distance off the tee. He now tops the PGA Tour for driving distance with an average of 323.9 yards.
During his rise to the top spot he has been using Cobra’s Speedzone driver. He has it set up with an incredibly low 5.5 degrees of loft.

Next in the bag are his woods. He carries a Cobra Ltd 3-wood and a Speedzone Tour 5-wood.
Cobra King One Length Utility (4, 5)
Shafts: LA Golf Rebar Proto
Cobra King Forged Tour One Length (6-PW)
Shafts: LA Golf Rebar Proto

DeChambeau’s irons start with a couple of Cobra King One Length Utility irons before he transitions down to Cobra King Forged Tour One Length irons from 6 down to PW. They’re fitted with extremely thick JumboMax grips which are the thickest grips on the market.
Artisan Prototype (50 @ 47, 55 @ 52, 60 @ 58)
Shafts: LA Golf Rebar Proto
DeChambeau did have some PXG and Cobra wedges in the bag for a time, but he now has three Artisan prototypes. These are also one length models.
SIK Prototype

His putter situation is hard to nail down. He has switched regularly between a blade and a mallet model made by Sik and also an Odyssey Exo model. At the moment he has gone for the blade prototype option.
DeChambeau uses the Bridgestone Tour B X ball. Like Tiger Woods, he signed a big money deal to play with the ball. Living up to his scientific reputation, he bathes his golf balls in saline water to check they are correctly balanced.
