Louis Oosthuizen: What’s In The Bag?

Let’s delve into the golf bag of 2010 Open Champion and All Square ambassador Louis Oosthuizen to see what equipment he uses. The nine-times European Tour winner recently finished T6 at the WGC FedEx St Jude Invitational in August.

The South African has been a Ping staffer for his entire professional career and has a bag full of the company’s clubs – apart from his wedges.

Driver

Ping G400 LST (10.5 degrees @ 9 degrees)
Shaft: Project X HZRDUS Smoke Green 60 6.5

The G400 LST (Low Spin) model is custom-engineered with tungsten weighting closer to the face to reduce spin approximately 300 rpm and promote low, stable spin with forgiveness.

3-Wood

Ping i25 (14 degrees @ 14.25 degrees)
Shaft: Fujikura Atmos Black Tour Spec 7.2 7 X

5-Wood

Ping G410 (20.5 degrees @ 19.25 degrees)
Shaft: Fujikura Ventus Red 9 X

The 37-year-old has the Ping i25 and Ping G410 fairway woods in the bag. Ping claims that the G fairway woods get the ball in the air easily due to the lower lead edge, which gets the club under the ball so impact occurs higher on the face.

He also sometimes uses a Ping G410 hybrid, but this will depend on courses and conditions.

Irons

He also uses Ping’s new Blueprint forged blades which fellow Ping pros Bubba Watson and Tony Finau carry. Oosthuizen has them from 3-PW. However, unusually his 3 iron has the Project Z HZDRUS Red shaft whilst he has the True Temper Dynamic Gold X100 shaft in the rest of his irons.

Wedges

Callaway Jaws MD5 (50-10S, 56-10S, 60-08C)
Shafts: True Temper Dynamic Gold Tour Issue S400

This is where he moves away from Ping and uses Callaway Jaws MD5 wedges, with 50, 56 and 60 degrees of loft. Callaway says that these wedges are designed with the most aggressive groove in golf to take spin and control to the next level.
