Where to travel for golf this winter – Florida & the Caribbean
The destination of Bali is not a hard sell. It’s an Indonesian island paradise with perfect beaches, beautiful scenery and great local culture. Local arts are one of the most famous attractions of the island and it has seen a significant increase in tourism in recent decades.
This picturesque holiday destination has something for everyone so the non-golfers can easily busy themselves whilst you play. Golf may not be the first thing you think of when visiting Bali but we think you need to pack your clubs. Here is a look at some of the great courses on offer.
Greg Norman and Bob Harrison designed this stunning course on the southwest coast of Bali. Nirwana Bali features luscious terrain, terraced rice paddies and a view of the famous Tanah Lot Temple. This course is stunning on the eye. The most famous hole, the par three 7th, involves a tee shot over an inlet of the Indian Ocean. This is not an easy course but the views will help bring keep a smile on your face if the golf doesn’t. As beautiful and luxurious as the layout is, it was not just built to look nice. This is one for the players but one of the most interesting courses in the world.
Another tropical delight is Bali National. The testing opening nine holes take you through dramatic terrain with creeks and canyons. There are also some great ocean views and a great chance to see some of the local wildlife. As you make the turn you will enjoy the lush sculpted fairways as they take you towards the two famous closing holes. The 17th features an island green and the 18th will require an approach over the lake. This recently renovated course is a lot of fun and very easy on the eye.
Now moving away from the coast and into the central highlands of Bali, Handara Golf & Resort is a unique place to play. Nestled in the crater of an extinct volcano and surrounded by lush green mountains, there are few courses with a more dramatic backdrop. The fresh mountain air creates a lovely climate to play in all year round. The immaculate condition of the course also makes it a joy to play. This is another course that you will struggle to get out of your head.
We are back on the coast for our final offering in Bali. The New Kuta Golf Resort features all that is great about golf in Bali. With pristine white beaches, lush vegetation and beautiful views of the Indian Ocean it has it all! This is a championship course and is the first links-style course in Indonesia. It is a fun course that will challenge players of all levels and has five sets of tees to choose from. The course hosted the European Tour’s Indonesian Open in 2009 and the clifftop golf of the 14th to the 16th are stand-outs!
