Welcome to 2017 and welcome to the beginning of a new year of golf! Now that the festive period has passed it’s full-steam ahead to the golf season. The only tour with any action this week is the PGA Tour, however, it’s going to be a great one.
Kapalua- Plantation Course, Hawaii
The Plantation Course (number 86 in our top 100 courses in the US) is the host course for this special event. The field this week is made up of champions from the 2015/16 PGA Tour season. Jordan Spieth is the defending champion and last year he destroyed the field in Maui. He has recently won the Australian Open at Royal Sydney Golf Club and will be looking to build on that. He goes into this week as the favourite according to many.
Another player to watch this week is Hideki Matsuyama. He is the most on-form golfer in the world right now with five wins in his last six starts! Oh by the way, in the event he didn’t win he came in second. He is on an astounding streak and is looking to continue that. Maybe this will be the year he finally takes a major title.
One of the big stories of the year so far has been Jason Day becoming a Nike athlete. For the first time this week we will see him decorated in swooshes as he makes his comeback from a back injury. The current world number one is always one to watch and this week is no different.
Other players to watch this week include Dustin Johnson, Patrick Reed and Russel Knox. Bubba Watson is playing a new ball this week, the Volvik S4 and has stated he may play a pink or even camouflage ball! Ah Bubba!
Needless to say, a field made up of 32 winners from last season is going to make for a great tournament. This will be our first look of the year at some of the world’s best players. Here’s to a great year of golf!
