Your golf trip to Tenerife & La Gomera, Spain

The Spanish Canary Islands of Tenerife and La Gomera offer year-round warm sunshine, ideal for playing golf. We’ve picked out four top-class courses and excellent accommodation options for the perfect golf trip.

Getting there

Tenerife has two airports, Los Rodeos in the north and Reina Sofia in the south. The north airport is closest to the capital city, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, around 12km away. The island of La Gomera is accessible from Tenerife via a ferry crossing from Los Cristianos in the south to San Sebastian de la Gomera, the capital city, which operates daily and takes less than an hour.

Abama Golf Club

Set high above Tenerife’s western coastline about 25km from the south airport, with incredible views to the island of La Gomera, lies the luxurious Ritz Carlton Abama Resort and the Abama Golf Club. The golf course is beautifully conditioned with endless sea views and elevated tees. Draped across natural undulations, it’s set alongside banana plantations with over 25,000 palm trees and 22 lakes and streams to offer a unique golfing experience. The signature is probably the 10th, rising to 480 metres above sea level, it doglegs left along a series of lakes.

Buenavista Golf Club

Designed by the great Seve Ballesteros and located in the remote northwest of Tenerife around 50km from both airports, Buenavista Golf Club is a stunning cliff-top course that provides incredible views over the Atlantic that are worth the trip alone. It’s a varied and interesting layout that’ll test every aspect of your game, as you would expect from Seve. It works its way along the ocean with several of the greens hugging the coastline. The picturesque first nine will warm you up, then the back nine becomes more dramatic with the 13th, 15th, 16th & 17th holes particularly eventful and scenic.

Golf Las Americas

Located in southern Tenerife around 15km from the south airport, Las Americas Golf is a highly popular course for holidaying golfers. Adjacent to the resorts of Playa de Las Americas and Los Cristianos alongside the main road to the airport, it might get busy particularly in high season, but the fairways and greens are in superb condition and the layout is as entertaining and varied as any on the island. Ball placement is key with water coming into play on at least eight holes. The landscape gently slopes towards the coast and contrasts wonderfully with the woodland and mountain backdrop.

Tecina Golf, La Gomera

The golf course here is part of the 4-star resort of Hotel Jardin Tecina, which sits high on a clifftop, about 25 minutes’ drive away from the capital. The drive from the ferry port along the mountains high above the Atlantic is spectacular. Tecina Golf is the island’s only golf course and is absolutely worth the visit. With incredible views of the Atlantic and Tenerife, the course descends on different terraces, giving it a unique stepped design. In the upper parts it feels wild and arid, before you descend to the tropical fruit trees of the lower parts. The 10th hole, which appears to be floating next to a cliff with the fairway divided by a ravine, is truly spectacular.

Las Terrazas Abama

This property is surrounded by beautiful gardens and is nestled within the Abama Golf Course with a huge outdoor pool. It’s made up of exclusive one- to four-bedroom apartments and suites, some with views of the sea and golf course, others with views of the complex. The Ritz-Carlton Abama offers a 5-star experience with 459 rooms, a world-class spa, as well as the nearby Abama Golf Club. This island retreat overlooks the Atlantic Ocean and neighbouring island of Gomera and has seven outdoor pools, a tennis academy and golden sandy beach. The resort is made up of Moorish-inspired buildings housing guest rooms and villas and is set in lush tropical gardens on a cliff top. There’s 10 restaurants. With two Michelin stars, M.B. serves dishes created by chef Martín Berasategui. Kabuki, with one Michelin star, offers innovative Japanese cuisine.

Bahia del Duque

Right next to Golf Las Americas golf course, the luxurious Bahia Del Duque is surrounded by acres of subtropical gardens, with five outdoor pools, eight restaurants, a fitness centre and stylish accommodation with private balconies. Choose between modern rooms and chic villas. Adeje Golf Course and Siam Water Park are around 5 minutes’ drive away and you can drive to Tenerife’s south airport in around 15 minutes.

Hotel Jardin Tecina

Tecina Golf on the island of La Gomera is part of Hotel Jardin Tecina and just a short drive away. The hotel has a number of sports facilities including a fitness centre, squash, mini golf and tennis courts. There’s also an outdoor pool and hot tub. Surrounded by beautiful gardens, Jardin Tecina enjoys great views over Tenerife and Mount Teide. Playa de Santiago Beach is within walking distance, and La Gomera Airport is just 1.6 miles away.
