Bryson DeChambeau won the U.S. Open by a single shot ahead of Rory McIlroy carrying a unique bag that includes 3D-printed ‘face bulging’ irons.
The American, who joined LIV Golf in 2022, won his second U.S. Open title after first winning it at Winged Foot in 2020. He finished on 6-under at Pinehurst No. 2 in North Carolina, a stroke ahead of McIlroy who made three bogeys in his final four holes to end his chances of winning his first major in 10 years.
For the week, DeChambeau averaged a huge 338.3 yards off the tee – 28 yards above the field average – with his 6-degree Krank Formula Fire Pro with an LA Golf Bryson prototype shaft.
Krank is a favorite brand of the long-drive competition players, featuring in the bags of Long Drive World Champions Maurice Allen and Kyle Berkshire. The driver features a carbon cup face crafted from super-hardened beta titanium.
DeChambeau’s irons are just as eye-catching. Avoda Golf irons come in both ‘Combo’ length and ‘Same’ length. The company is owned by Tom Bailey, who previously worked with DeChambeau’s coach, Mike Schy.
This set of prototype 3D-printed Avoda Golf irons were first put in play at Augusta National in April where DeChambeau finished T-6. They have a face curvature design with added bulge which got people talking at the U.S. Open. The irons are said to be 3D printed to create the required bulge shape.
Explaining the design of his irons, he told the Golf Channel: “If you see the curvature of the face, it’s kind of like a driver or hybrid. It does cave in on the heel and on the toe as well, which creates that curvature. So, for the speeds that I have, when I hit it on the toe or heel it doesn’t overcorrect. Most people think that irons… the MOI there doesn’t affect the curvature, but it actually does at my speeds, the lower lofted, higher speeds.
“So, if I hit it on the toe I was hooking it like crazy and if I hit the heel I was missing it right like crazy. Now, by creating curvature on the toe and the heel, to get it started a little farther right on the toe and a little farther left on the heel, it makes sure it doesn’t go too far offline”.
