Golfing on the Edge at Pinnacle Point
Nestled where the rugged Atlantic coastline meets the rolling Pyrenees, the Basque Country offers a truly distinctive golf travel experience. A trip through Biarritz, France, and San Sebastián, Spain, combines elite golfing with European charm, coastal luxury, and the rich cultural tapestry of one of Europe’s most intriguing regions. For golf lovers seeking a blend of scenic fairways, culinary excellence, and seaside allure, this trans-border journey is nothing short of sublime.
The coastal town of Biarritz has long been associated with elegance, surf culture, and European aristocracy. But it’s also one of the most historically significant golf destinations on the continent. Golf arrived in Biarritz in the 1880s with British tourists, and the town is home to one of the oldest golf courses in mainland Europe: Golf de Biarritz Le Phare, founded in 1888. This iconic 18-hole course may be short by modern standards — measuring just under 5,500 meters — but it demands strategic play with narrow fairways, fast greens, and swirling ocean breezes. Golf de Biarritz Le Phare is also famous for its setting: perched on a plateau just inland from the town center, offering views of the Bay of Biscay and Biarritz’s glamorous rooftops.
Just a short drive from the center lies Chiberta Golf Club, a course that fuses links and forest-style golf, designed by legendary architect Tom Simpson. With its pine-lined fairways, sandy dunes, and proximity to Anglet’s wild beaches, Chiberta is a favourite for those who crave challenge and natural beauty in equal measure.
Also nearby is Golf d’Arcangues, a picturesque inland course built around a 15th-century Basque village. Here, players are treated to panoramic views of the Pyrenees while tackling a layout that combines rolling terrain with generous fairways and tricky greens.
Biarritz is more than a golf destination — it’s a lifestyle. After a round, golfers can stroll through its Belle Époque streets, relax in its famed thalassotherapy spas, or sip local Irouléguy wine on the terrace of a seaside café. The food scene is exceptional. Michelin-starred restaurants share the stage with traditional Basque bistros serving axoa (a spiced veal stew) and piperade (a savoury pepper-and-egg dish). Local markets, like the Halles de Biarritz, offer fresh produce, cheeses, and charcuterie that reflect the region’s deep-rooted culinary heritage.
Crossing the Spanish border into San Sebastián (Donostia in Basque) opens another chapter of this golf journey — one steeped in both natural beauty and epicurean wonder. Known globally for its food culture, San Sebastián has more Michelin stars per capita than almost any other city in the world, but its golf scene is equally enticing.
The jewel here is Real Sociedad de Golf de San Sebastián (Basozabal Golf). Located just 10 minutes from the city center, this championship course was designed by José María Olazábal, one of Spain’s greatest golfers. With elevated tees, undulating greens, and a backdrop of the lush Basque countryside, Basozabal offers a blend of technical precision and scenic pleasure.
Another outstanding option is Golf de Hondarribia (Real Golf Club de San Sebastián), situated on a hill overlooking the Bidasoa River. This historic club, founded in 1910, sits near the French border and delivers sweeping views of the Bay of Txingudi. The tree-lined fairways and tight layout demand accuracy and finesse rather than brute strength.
No golf trip to this region would be complete without venturing beyond the courses. In San Sebastián, spend an afternoon exploring the old town (Parte Vieja), where pintxo bars overflow with skewered seafood, grilled meats, and fine wines. A walk along La Concha Beach offers a postcard-perfect curve of golden sand backed by 19th-century elegance.
Just inland from Biarritz and San Sebastián lie ancient Basque villages like Espelette, known for its dried red peppers, and Ainhoa, classified “the most beautiful village of France.” The cultural identity here is strong, expressed in the Euskara language, traditional music, and athletic competitions like pelota and stone lifting.
The best time for a golf trip to Biarritz and San Sebastián is from April through October, when the weather is mild and the greens are in prime condition. Summer brings sun-drenched beaches and lively festivals, while early autumn offers fewer crowds and beautiful foliage in the countryside.
Biarritz Airport offers direct flights from major European hubs, and San Sebastián is accessible via Spain’s excellent train network. The drive between the two towns takes about 45 minutes, making it easy to split your stay between both sides of the border. Renting a car allows flexibility, especially if you plan to visit courses in more rural settings.
What makes a golf trip to Biarritz and San Sebastián truly exceptional is the rare fusion of world-class golf, cross-cultural richness, gourmet dining, and dramatic coastal scenery. It’s not just about hitting the perfect drive or sinking that long birdie putt — it’s about immersing yourself in a region where every experience, on or off the course, is steeped in character.
So whether you’re chasing birdies at Chiberta or enjoying pintxos after a round at Basozabal, the Basque Coast promises a golf holiday that stimulates all the senses — and leaves you dreaming of a return long before your final tee shot.
