The Els Club Vilamoura: Golfing Grandeur in the Algarve

Miyu Yamashita may not be the longest hitter on the LPGA Tour, but at the 2025 AIG Women’s Open, she proved that accuracy, consistency, and a razor-sharp short game can conquer even the toughest links. With calm nerves and a precise game plan, Yamashita navigated the demanding Royal Porthcawl layout to claim her first LPGA Tour title — and her first major championship — holding off challenges from home favourite Charley Hull and fellow Japanese star Minami Katsu to win by two shots.

The 24-year-old from Osaka entered the final round with a narrow lead and never lost control, relying on her clean iron play and stellar scrambling to maintain momentum through gusty conditions and fast-running greens. Her calm demeanour under pressure was as impressive as her stats — leading the LPGA in scrambling and ranking among the best in greens in regulation, despite being one of the shortest hitters in the field.
Yamashita’s bag was filled with trusted tools from Srixon and Cleveland Golf, including a ZXi driver, ZX Mk II woods and hybrids, a split set of ZXi5 and ZXi7 irons, and the always-reliable RTZ wedges. While distance wasn’t her weapon of choice, she leaned on precise gapping and confident execution, especially on and around the greens with the Z-STAR XV ball — a key part of her scoring formula all week.

Already a star in Japan with multiple JLPGA titles and back-to-back Player of the Year honours in 2022 and 2023, Yamashita earned her LPGA Tour card just months ago through Q-Series. This win marks a new chapter in her international career — and firmly establishes her as a rising force on the global stage. Let’s take a closer look at the exact setup that helped her capture one of the most coveted trophies in women’s golf.
