Island Golf Around the Globe: Where Nature Meets the Fairway
Shane Lowry won the BMW PGA Championship by one shot over Rory McIlroy and Jon Rahm without making a bogey all week. Here’s the club set-up he used to get the job done.
It was the 35-year-old’s sixth win on the DP World Tour and his first victory since winning the Open Championship in 2019 at Royal Portrush Golf Club.
The Irishman posted a seven-under 65 to finish on 17 under for the 54-hole event, shortened due to the passing of Queen Elizabeth II on Thursday.
The BMW PGA was also the first qualification event for the 2023 Ryder Cup, which puts Lowry in great shape to make Luke Donald’s Team Europe at Marco Simone Golf & Country Club in Rome.
Lowry is a Srixon/Cleveland staffer but isn’t tied into a full-bag contract which allows him to play TaylorMade fairway woods and an Odyssey putter.
Including his Srixon ZX Utility and Srixon irons (ZX5 and ZX7), Lowry carries three different iron models to give him a nice mix of distance, ball flight and forgiveness.
He said he hit his 5-iron like “a bullet” on the final hole from 242 yards to the centre of the green to set up a tournament-winning birdie.
One of the best wedge players in the world, he is a long-time user of Cleveland wedges and currently plays the RTX ZipCore model.
Lowry’s victory continues a great year for Srixon golf balls, with the brand’s range of Z-Star models also used to win two women’s major championships, including Ashleigh Buhai’s victory at the AIG Women’s Open at Muirfield.
