Collin Morikawa won the PGA Championship at TPC Harding Park for his first major title – here’s a look inside his major-winning golf bag.
The 23-year-old American, now #5 in the official world golf rankings, won the Barracuda Championship in 2019 and the Workday Charity Open in July. He is only the fourth player to win the PGA before the age of 24 after Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy.
Having used TaylorMade equipment throughout his amateur career, he signed with them after joining the professional ranks 18 months ago.
The key shot on his way to his first major title came on the drivable par-4 16th on Sunday, where he hit his tee shot 292 yards to within seven feet of the hole with his TaylorMade SIM for an eagle that took him to the top of the leaderboard.
For the new SIM Fairway Woods, TaylorMade reincarnated their classic V Steel Sole Design to help with better turf interaction and versatility, and added Twist Face which utilises corrective face angles to straighten ball flights on off-centre hits.
Coming into the Workday Charity Open, Morikawa switched from a 19-degree TaylorMade SIM Max 5 wood to a 19-degree SIM Max Rescue club. The change worked. A key moment on Sunday was his 230-yard approach to three feet for an eagle on the 5th hole – using his SIM Max Rescue.
He has two SIM Max Rescues that he interchanges depending on the course and approach shots he faces. One of his 19° Rescues goes high, landing softly at 245 yards and another has a flatter trajectory landing at 245 yards with roll.
During his victorious week, he ranked third in both strokes gained approach and strokes gained tee to green. A huge shot was on the third play-off hole with his 8-iron which he hit to nine feet from 173 yards.
He uses a split set of TaylorMade irons. The 4- and 5-iron are the P750, a forged cavity back, while the rest of the set is the pure muscleback P730.
Morikawa uses two TaylorMade MG2 wedges, and has a single Vokey SM8 wedge, the only non-TaylorMade club in the bag. It has a high 14 degree bounce. He says he has used a lot of bounce for a while and it just works for him.
Morikawa had a great week with his putter on his way to victory, and ranked first in putts per greens-in-regulation across the four rounds. This is the same putter he has used for a while now. He says it’s got a helpful sightline on top and sits nicely in his hands.
Morikawa used to use the Pro V1x, but switched to the TP5. He said he prefers its softer feel off the putter, and it’s knocked off 100 to 200 rpms of spin from the Pro V1x so it’s brought him into a nice spin range.
