They call it the supermarket of golf as there are few places that rival the choice on offer. Myrtle Beach, South Carolina has a course that every golfer will love. Being in South Carolina it also means that the climate makes for great conditions all year around too.
For destination of the week this week we’re going to look at ‘the golf capital of the world’ and tell you the places to play. We have gone through our list of the best courses in South Carolina and here are the top courses in Myrtle Beach you should play.
It is a testament to the excellent experience you get at Dunes Golf and Beach Club that many regard it as the best course in the Myrtle Beach area. This was one of the first courses designed by Robert Trent Jones, and in fact one of the first built in the area. The holes at this course are named to give the golfers an idea of the challenge that will face them on that hole. Some would call that charming and others may call it sadistic but it depends on how you’re playing.
The 13th is the signature hole and this picturesque par five makes its way around Lake Singleton. The course has hosted the Senior PGA Championship. The course also has an extra hole brought in when Rees Jones refurbished the course in 2003. This hole is used as a tie-breaker or when a hole is closed for repairs. If a course stands out in an area as packed with top-quality golf as Myrtle Beach is, then you know it is exceptional!
From the minute you drive up towards the clubhouse at Caledonia Golf and Fish Club you know you’re in for a treat. This property used to be a rice plantation but now is now home to a piece some wonderful golfing land. Some have even described the course as having ‘18-signature holes’!
The course makes its way through picturesque wooded land and navigates around streams to create pure golfing joy. The course is tricky and will test your accuracy. As you make your way up the picturesque 18th a difficult second shot will test your nerves as onlookers from the clubhouse stop to watch.
Tom Fazio is the famous designer behind the course at TPC Myrtle Beach. Like most of the courses in the Myrtle Beach area, this course has been created to make the most of its wonderful natural surrounds. The course has hosted many prestigious events including the Senior PGA Championship and the Champions Tour Championship.
This great course is open to the public and is definitely one you should play. With around seventy bunkers dotted around the course you’ll want to play some accurate golf! Each fairway provides a challenge of its own but it is a fair and enjoyable golf course.
This course was designed by Mike Strantz who also designed the Caledonia Golf and Fish Club mentioned above. The course at True Blue Plantation is reminiscent of features from Pine Valley and Pinehurst No.2. This course has a natural feel about it and is packed with natural features. True Blue Plantation is known for always being in immaculate condition. This is one of the best courses in South Carolina never mind Myrtle Beach.
The course uses natural hazards like woodlands and wetlands to test your golf and your nerves. Like many of the courses here this is a former plantation. It is a naturally beautiful course with wonderful surroundings. This is a golf experience to savour and one that will live long into your golfing memory.
Other great courses in the area include the four courses at Barefoot Resort, The Reserve at Pawleys Island, Pawleys Plantation, Legends (Heritage) and Myrtle Beach National King’s North.
