Tenerife may be one of the best places in the world to take a golf trip. It is one of the seven Canary Islands that sit just off the north-west coast of Africa. Tenerife is the most populated of all of Spain’s islands and the most visited. This is a great destination for a holiday, especially when you take your clubs.
Tenerife provides you with holiday golf at its best. Here is what you need to know about golf in Tenerife so you can plan your pre-season practice.
Ritz-Carlton Abama
There is probably no greater symbol of paradise than palm trees. Well the golf course at Abama features no less than 90,000 of them! The late Dave Thomas was responsible for the fantastic course at Abama.
The course meanders around 22 lakes and takes in incredible views of the Atlantic and the island of La Gomera. This is a challenging course with undulating and elevated greens. You don’t want to miss on the wrong side of these greens, well unless you’ve got the touch of Mickelson.
The signature hole is the par five 10th. This absolutely stunning hole involves a downhill tee shot past some lurking water hazards and bunkers. The doglegged approach to the green creates a visual treat.
Golf del Sur
This course is one for the precision golfers. This facility features 27 holes and has been designed to showcase the native flora and fauna of the land. Again, palm trees feature heavily as do the very dark-sanded bunkers.
Some of the world’s best players have played and competed here. In 1995 Golf del Sur hosted the Shell Wonderful World of Golf tournament which was played by Ernie Els and Phil Mickelson.
This is a tricky course, especially the 3rd and 4th holes. However, even if you are having an off-day the views around this track will keep you smiling. The impressive ravine that cuts through the course and the views of Mount Teide add to the great experience.
Buenavista Golf
There’s a theme to the destination of the week this week, have you spotted it? Yes, it’s the wonderful views that the courses in Tenerife offer. Severiano Ballesteros designed Buenavista Golf, and it has a links land feel to it. The local region was actually after the views it boasts.
The course sits between the stunning northwest coast of the island and the Teno mountains. Expect to face some blustery conditions, especially when you get right out on the coastline.
The par threes of the back nine will require every ounce of your attention as both are situated on a cliff! A waterfall and an ornamental lake connect the 9th and 18th holes. This feature provides the cherry on the cake of what will surely be a memorable round of golf.
Golf Costa Adeje
Pepe Gancedo put together this course that blends superbly into its surroundings. He was also responsible for the course at Golf del Sur, mentioned earlier. The land that Golf Costa Adeje is built on was packed with character long before it became a golf course.
Golf Costa Adeje was originally a banana plantation. The land is now home two a course made up of six par threes, six par fours and six par fives. Dark volcanic sand creates a feature of waste bunkers. Stone walls feature on some fairways to add the uniqueness of this course.
The hardest two holes on the course are par threes! The 7th and the 10th make up stroke index one and two, respectively. Gancedo has been described as the “Picasso of golf”. With courses like this one it is easy to see why.
