Let’s take a look in the bag of WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play champion and new world number one golfer Scottie Scheffler – and how he just got one up on Tiger Woods.
The 25-year-old’s 4-and-3 victory over Kevin Kisner at Austin Country Club in Texas, his third PGA Tour win this season, saw him overtake Jon Rahm and Collin Morikawa at the summit of the Official World Golf Rankings.
Earlier this season the American won the WM Phoenix Open, his maiden Tour win, and then claimed his second victory at the Arnold Palmer Invitational just a few weeks ago.
There were just 42 days between his first PGA Tour win and claiming the world number one spot – the quickest that has ever been achieved. Tiger Woods is the second quickest to achieve that, at 252 days.
It marked an incredible 18 months for Scheffler, having only gained his PGA Tour card in 2019 before winning 2020’s Rookie of the Year award.
What’s in the bag
The Texan had been a free agent equipment wise, but signed a multi-year deal with TaylorMade after his win at ‘Arnie’s place’ at Bay Hill. “I’ve worked with TaylorMade’s team on Tour for multiple seasons and their commitment to getting the right equipment in my bag was a driving force in joining Team TaylorMade,” Scheffler said.
Before signing the deal, he had already been playing with the TaylorMade’s Stealth Plus driver, replacing his Ping G425 LST, and he now also uses TaylorMade’s Stealth fairway woods, replacing his Nike VR Pro Ltd 3-wood.
TaylorMade said during testing the Stealth Plus driver with Scheffler that he saw his average ball speed gain 3.4 mph off the tee and his ball travel a further 11 yards.
During his rookie campaign, Scheffler had used TaylorMade’s P730 irons, but then switched to the company’s P-7TW irons at The American Express in 2021.
His putter of choice is a Scotty Cameron Special Select Timeless Tourtype GSS Prototype. This putter is longer than standard at 36 inches in length, to meet his 6 feet 3 inches frame, and is relatively new to his bag, having been introduced just before the WM Phoenix Open.
