Inside Martin Couvra’s Winning WITB at DP World Tour
Rory McIlroy went one better than Tiger Woods by becoming the first player to win the FedEx Cup three times after a brilliant comeback at the Tour Championship. Let’s take a look inside his history-making golf bag.
The Northern Irishman won the whopping $18m jackpot after overturning a six-stroke deficit during a thrilling final round at East Lake.
McIlroy shot a four-under 66 to end the week on 21 under and a shot clear of world No 1 Scottie Scheffler and Sungjae Im.
The 33-year-old hit six birdies and two bogeys to hold off Scheffler, who had started the tournament six shots ahead of him due to the Tour Championship scoring system. That six-shot lead over McIlroy was still in place come Sunday.
McIlroy’s win sees him become the first three-time FedEx Cup champion – one more than Tiger Woods.
McIlroy won in Atlanta playing with a full bag of TaylorMade golf clubs and ball. He used his Stealth Plus driver to great effect, hitting nine drives over 300 yards on Sunday, including a 342-yard drive down the left side of the fairway on the final hole. McIlroy led the field in driving distance at a huge 334 yards.
His TaylorMade Spider X Hydro Blast putter took centre stage at the par-3 15th when he sunk a 30-foot birdie putt to give him a tie for the lead. He then used his Milled Grind 3 wedge for a brilliant par save at 16 while Scheffler bogeyed, before making par on the 18th to claim the title.
At East Lake McIlroy was second in strokes gained/putting, gaining more than six shots on the field. He also led the field in putts per green in regulation.
