With input from Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy, TaylorMade has launched their updated P700 irons for better players who want a compact club that delivers extra distance and feel.
The update sees new TaylorMade P770, P7MC (cavity-back), and P7MB (muscle-back blade) irons. They are all designed for lower handicap players who like the smaller size and workable shape of a blade but also want distance and some extra forgiveness.
They are priced at $1299 for steel (KBS Tour) and $1499 for graphite shafts for an 8-piece set with the stock configuration being 3-PW, with an AW also available. They are equipped with KBS Tour Steel shafts (X 130g, S 120g) as well as Golf Pride Z-Grip 360 in Grey/Black.
First released in 2020, the P770 was seen as the slimmer version of the popular P790, for better players who wanted all the tech but in a smaller looking iron. They are the most forgiving option in this latest P700 Series release.
The updated P770 offers that player’s shape iron with a thinner and slightly more rounded topline and a shorter blade length. The new line also has less offset at address than the previous generation, a change based on feedback from Tiger Woods who used P770 long irons at the 2022 PGA and Open Championships.
The centre of gravity is lowest in long irons and progressively shifts it higher throughout the set to the shorter irons. This encourages easier launch and playability in the long irons, while optimizing trajectory and spin in the scoring clubs. This has been done by the tungsten weighting scheme being redesigned.
The sound and feel has been improved with the addition of SpeedFoam Air which dampens sound and strategically supports the face. As well as the added speed made possible by the thinnest P770 face TaylorMade has produced, the Thru-Slot Speed Pocket and Inverted Cone Technology also increases ball speed and forgiveness across the face.
These tour-inspired irons delivers ultimate control and precision. They are for precision with a hint of forgiveness. They have minimal offset and perimeter weighting, and a narrow sole and tight leading edge providing consistency through the turf. They have a forged ‘Metal-T’ within the cavity back, creating the typical aesthetic of a premium TaylorMade iron.
Used in both P7MC and P7MB, TaylorMade’s Compact Grain Forging process uses 2,000 tons of pressure, more than double the industry standard for forging. The additional force produces a tighter grain structure for the best possible feel and strength properties.
These tour-inspired irons are designed for the best ball strikers who demand surgical control and precision shot making. They were designed after detailed feedback from testing with Rory McIlroy and Collin Morikawa. They now have a shorter blade length, slightly narrower sole, and progressive offset to create a minimalist profile that’s designed to control shot shape and trajectory.
They now also have more bounce to the leading edge which creates an improved sensation through the turf. And the shorter blade length allowed TaylorMade engineers to create an updated backbar using symmetrical geometry for more mass to be positioned directly behind the face to support the point of impact and improve feel.
