What’s in Viktor Hovland’s winning golf bag?

Viktor Hovland birdied seven of his final nine holes to overtake Scottie Scheffler and Matt Fitzpatrick to win the BMW Championship at Olympia Fields. His bag is an interesting mix.

The Norwegian finished on 17 under, two shots ahead of World No. 1 Scheffler and Fitzpatrick, after carding a 61 that broke the course record of 62 set by Max Homa and Sam Burns earlier in the week. Rory McIlroy shot 66 to finish fourth on 12 under.

The BMW Championship is the penultimate round of the season-ending FedEx play-offs, with the top 30 qualifying for next week’s Tour Championship finale at East Lake Golf Course in Atlanta.

Scheffler will begin the Tour Championship with a two-shot advantage after finishing the week top of the FedEx Cup ranking. Hovland will start in second, McIlroy – the defending champion – third, and Jon Rahm fourth. 

What’s in the bag?

Hovland is a Ping staff player with most his bag made up of the brand’s clubs. He signed a contract with the company in June 2019.

But he mixes his bag with TaylorMade and Titleist clubs. At Olympia Fields he used a TaylorMade Stealth Plus 3-wood. TaylorMade recently upgraded its ground-breaking Stealth range with the Stealth 2 drivers, fairway woods, hybrids and irons.

He also used a Titleist U505 (3). The U505 is a wide-soled, high-launching utility iron. A good utility iron can give you that perfect blend of distance and versatility. Though more tricky to hit than a hybrid for many golfers, they do allow you to shape the ball and control your ball flight while also offering a fair degree of forgiveness.
