As the tag line for the city goes ‘people make Glasgow’ and it is very true. A city with an interesting past and an exciting future, Glasgow is the most populous city in Scotland and a great destination. From one of the world’s premier shopping destinations, Buchanan St, to a host of art galleries and cultural attractions, Glasgow is a vibrant and dynamic city.
One of the richest regions in the world for top championship golf courses is Ayrshire. Glasgow provides a great gateway to this area that is densely packed with true golfing treasures.
Named after the third Marquess of Ailsa, who owned the land on which it was built, this par-71, 7489-yard Championship course is one of golf’s storied places. Home to four Open Championships, Ailsa has shaped some of the most remarkable moments in the tournament’s history. Set alongside the glorious Ayrshire coastline, with Arran and Ailsa Craig as a stunning backdrop, it is one of the finest golfing destinations in the world.
Royal Troon, host course of the 2016 Open Championship is a great place to start. The site of one of the best battles on a final day at The Open between Phil Mickelson and the eventual winner Henrik Stenson, you can come and see exactly how good the golf that was played that day was! Widely regarded as one of the hardest courses on The Open rota, Royal Troon is a special place to play.
Prestwick Golf Club is a course of huge historical importance to our great sport as this is where The Open Championship was born. With a clubhouse that is more like a history of golf museum, this old-fashioned links course is fun to play and will give you serious bragging rights.
Dundonald Links is a newcomer to the Ayrshire golf scene but it’s an incredible addition. Taking its place in the crop of great new courses in Scotland by Kyle Phillips such as Kingsbarns and Castle Stuart, Dundonald is a wonderful modern links course. With some classic features of Scottish links like the railway running past, there is definitely a nod to tradition on a clearly modern course. Dundonald will host the Scottish Open in 2017 and held the Ladies Scottish Open in 2016. This is a great course for all golfers to challenge themselves and enjoy a round on.
