The Best Golf Courses in Bordeaux, France
Tucked into the rolling glacial terrain of southeastern Wisconsin, Erin Hills Golf Course stands as a beacon of pure, championship-calibre golf rooted in nature, history, and Midwestern pride. Located just 37 miles northwest of Milwaukee in the village of Erin, this world-renowned course has earned its place among the greats — not only for its challenging design and major tournament pedigree but also for its deep connection to the land and local culture.
Erin Hills owes its dramatic topography to glaciers that carved out the landscape thousands of years ago. The natural undulations, ridges, and kettle moraine features provided the ideal canvas for golf course designers Michael Hurdzan, Dana Fry, and Ron Whitten, who opened the course in 2006 with a mission: create a minimalist, walking-only course that tests the best while celebrating the terrain.
Unlike many modern layouts, Erin Hills required minimal earthmoving — over 75% of the course rests on its original landform. The result is an authentic, wind-swept links-style experience with fescue-covered fairways and no water hazards, where strategy, shot placement, and patience are essential. The greens are large and often undulating, demanding skilful approach shots and precise putting.
At nearly 7,800 yards from the tips, Erin Hills is long, but its width and openness make it playable for all levels, depending on the tee choice. Still, it’s no surprise that the USGA selected Erin Hills to host the 2017 U.S. Open, where Brooks Koepka claimed his first major championship with a dominant performance at 16-under par—a record-tying score in relation to par at a U.S. Open.
There’s a spiritual quality to Erin Hills. Unlike the bustling resorts or private enclaves of golf’s elite, Erin Hills embraces simplicity. There are no villas or spas — just a charming lodge, a handful of cottages, and a warm Midwestern welcome. Golfers stay, eat, and play in a place where the rhythm of life slows and the game takes center stage.
Walking is mandatory — caddies are encouraged — further enhancing the purist experience. The course offers awe-inspiring views in every direction, with the spire of the Holy Hill Basilica often visible in the distance, anchoring the landscape in the region’s cultural and spiritual identity.
The surrounding Washington County and Kettle Moraine region offer a rich mix of natural beauty and cultural heritage. Outdoor lovers can explore nearby Kettle Moraine State Forest, home to hiking, cycling, and birdwatching trails that weave through rolling hills, kettle lakes, and hardwood forests.
The town of Hartford, just a short drive from the course, reflects small-town Wisconsin charm. You’ll find local diners, microbreweries, and historic landmarks like the Schauer Arts Center and the Wisconsin Automotive Museum, which houses one of the largest collections of Kissel cars — a now-defunct luxury brand manufactured in Hartford in the early 20th century.
Foodies will appreciate the proximity to Wisconsin’s culinary identity. Farm-to-table cuisine, cheese shops, and Friday night fish fries are part of the regional flavour. And of course, you’re never far from a craft brewery pouring everything from crisp lagers to bold IPAs.
Since hosting the 2017 U.S. Open, Erin Hills has firmly established itself on the global golf map. But even before the major, the course played host to several top-tier events, including the 2008 U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links and the 2011 U.S. Amateur, won by Kelly Kraft over Patrick Cantlay.
Its design, prestige, and impeccable conditioning have earned it a spot in every serious golfer’s bucket list. Yet despite its accolades, Erin Hills remains refreshingly unpretentious. It offers a world-class golf experience with none of the flash — just pure golf, pure land, and pure joy.
Whether you come for the challenge, the solitude, or the scenery, Erin Hills delivers an unforgettable experience. It’s not just a golf course — it’s a testament to what the game can be when designers respect the land and players respect the game. Paired with the rustic beauty and warm hospitality of the Wisconsin countryside, Erin Hills offers something rare: a chance to connect with golf on its most authentic terms.
So lace up your walking shoes, grab a caddie, and breathe in the fresh glacial air. Erin Hills is waiting — and it plays as beautifully as it looks.
