Dominican Republic: Stay & Play
There’s nothing quite like a round of golf to work up an appetite. For those who appreciate world-class golf and gastronomy, there are several golf resorts in Europe where you can enjoy both. We pick our favourites across the continent.
Set in the beautiful National Park of the Sintra Mountains, Penha Longa Resort is just 25km from Lisbon. It’s incredibly luxurious with a palatial spa and almost 200 rooms made up of standard rooms, suites and a selection of luxury villas.
At the resort there are 27 golf holes that make the most of the stunning surroundings. Penha Longa Atlantic Championship Golf Course was designed by famed architect Robert Trent Jones Jnr and hosted the Portuguese Open three times in 1994, 1995 and 2010. The course weaves across sloping terrain with several holes offering incredible views of the surrounding landscape and hills.
Penha Longa offers a superb range of dining options with nine restaurants taking you around the world. You can enjoy Portuguese, Spanish, Italian, Chinese, Japanese, Indian and Thai, but it’s best known for offering three restaurants each with a Michelin star. LAB by Sergi Arola has its roots in the Mediterranean but with Portuguese ingredients and is set in a beautiful dining room with views of the golf course.
Then there’s Midori, the only Michelin-starred Japanese restaurant in Portugal, where chef Pedro Almeida takes diners on a unique culinary adventure showcasing modern Japanese fine dining. Finally, there is The Eneko Lisboa restaurant by Basque chef Eneko Atxa, who currently holds six Michelin stars. The most recent gastronomic project at the resort, it offers a unique take on traditional Basque cuisine with modern and innovative touches.
The world famous Gleneagles hotel is set in 850 acres close to the stunning Scottish Highlands. The resort offers guests a superb choice of sports and leisure facilities and has over 230 luxurious guest bedrooms and suites, each offering the perfect retreat in a tranquil setting.
Gleneagles is the epitome of a golf and gastronomy destination. With a choice of three championship golf courses and exceptional academy facilities, the golf is well taken care of. On the gastronomy front, there’s one of the best chefs in the UK in Andrew Fairlie whose restaurant here has been awarded two Michelin stars. The opulent a la carte menu celebrating Scotland’s incredible produce is served in a beautiful setting in the heart of the resort.
The three wonderful championship golf courses at Gleneagles bear the hallmarks of two of golf’s greatest names. Five-time Open Championship winner James Braid laid out both the King’s and Queen’s courses, while all-time great Jack Nicklaus later added the PGA Centenary Course, which hosted the 2014 Ryder Cup.
Adare Manor has been confirmed as the host course for the 2026 Ryder Cup. The 7,509-yard, par-72 course, upgraded by celebrated golf architect Tom Fazio, is set among 840 acres of pristine parkland, with cedar and oakwood trees and the natural water hazard of the River Maigue, has been called the most beautiful parkland course outside of Augusta National.
The manor itself is a stunning, huge 19th century manor house converted into a luxury hotel. There’s 104 guest rooms and suites in addition to manor lodges and garden cottages along with a luxury spa and world-class facilities.
The Michelin starred Oak Room Restaurant celebrates Irish cuisine and provides one of the best food experiences in golf. The dining room itself dates back to the 1830s and exhibits all the comfort and grandeur one would expect.
On Tenerife’s west coast, the Ritz-Carlton Abama offers a five-star experience with 459 rooms, a world-class spa, and the nearby Abama Golf Course. This island retreat overlooks the Atlantic and is made up of Moorish-inspired buildings housing guest rooms and villas set in lush cliff-top tropical gardens.
The hotel’s gourmet offering is world renowned. There’s Italian, Spanish and BBQ to choose from at the 10 restaurants which include the two Michelin-starred M.B, which serves dishes created by renowned chef Martín Berasategui, and Kabuki, with one Michelin star, which offers innovative Japanese cuisine with a fusion twist.
Set high above Tenerife’s western coastline with incredible views, the resort is home to Abama Golf Club. The golf course is beautifully conditioned with endless sea views and elevated tees. Draped across natural undulations, it runs alongside banana plantations with over 25,000 palm trees and 22 lakes and streams to offer a unique, memorable golfing experience.
Monte Rei in the Eastern Algarve is an exclusive residential community set in 1,000 acres of picturesque countryside with sweeping views of the Serra do Caldeirao mountains to the north and the Atlantic Ocean to the south. The resort overlooks a superb Jack Nicklaus signature golf course which opened in 2007. For a great golf experience, we recommend staying at the beautiful Monte Rei Villas, and you can also stay at the Clubhouse Residences, located next to the clubhouse overlooking the 18th fairway.
The Nicklaus-designed par-72 Championship course at the resort is a brilliant design with water coming into play on eleven of the eighteen holes, and is rated by All Square as Portugal‘s finest layout – and it’s about to get a rival. Visitors to Monte Rei will soon be able to enjoy another course from the Golden Bear, and Nicklaus himself has said it has the potential to be even better.
Under the direction of Executive Chef Rui Silvestre, Monte Rei has become a gastronomic destination offering a great variety of superb dining experiences, both relaxed and formal. The main restaurant, Vistas Rui Silvestre, has earned one Michelin star and offers a complete gourmet experience using fresh, locally-sourced ingredients to create gastronomic delights overlooking the golf course with a beautiful terrace.
This fantastic destination for golfers is set alongside the Atlantic Ocean and Palmares Golf Course. It’s a small, charming art deco hotel with a beach house ambience and gorgeous sea views from each of the stylish rooms.
The golf course here was created by famed architect Robert Trent Jones Jr, who has laid out three distinctive nine-hole loops, ‘Alvor’, ‘Lagos’ and ‘Praia’, adjacent to the Bay of Lagos. The course weaves back and forth offering golfers a brilliant combination of links and inland golf for a truly memorable, picture perfect round.
The resort’s main restaurant, Al Sud, has one Michelin star and is set within the resort’s clubhouse, enjoying gorgeous views over the Bay of Lagos and the Alvor Estuary. It’s an elegant space where chef Louis Anjos serves modern, creative cuisine centred on three menus that showcase the local area and its flavours. The lovely covered terrace adds to the appeal.
Monte Rei Golf & Country Club, ranked nr1 golf course in Portugal for several years with its Michelin star restaurant Vistas Rui Silvestre in its third consecutive year with 1 star, should be in this list.
