Interview with an All Square member – Steve Birtz

Every week, we will be interviewing passionate golfers who enjoy using All Square. During our first interview, we had a nice conversation with Steve Birtz, a Luxembourgish golfer who plays on the beautiful Golf de Preisch in France. Steve told us about his golf background, his funniest moment playing the game and who he admires.

Part 1: ABOUT GOLF

To start off, can you tell us how you first got into golf?

One day, I saw my neighbor fitting his clubs in his garage. It got me curious, so I joined him for a round. After the round, I wanted to try it myself on the range because I couldn’t understand why he was struggling on some shots. It looked so easy to me.

It took me half a bucket until I finally hit a ball, that famous moment every golfer knows, and I remember saying to myself “Wow, I want to hit it again, further.”

What would make golf more fun?

Playing Golf: I would suggest playing with preferred lies on the fairway. Playing mud-balls or playing the ball from the middle of the fairway out of a divot can take the fun and momentum out of a good round. Being penalised even if you hit the middle of the fairway is just stupid and frustrating.

Watching Golf on TV: Having the Protracer-Tracer on every shot would be great, especially on the tee box and fairway. Seeing the different shapes of shots players use on a same hole is just the best thing ever!

Your funniest golf experience?

It was during my first team foursome match with my playing partner Paolo, in Sarrebourg, France. I holed a tough chip to go 2 up after 14 holes. At that moment we had the terrible idea of celebrating in Ryder Cup style. Paolo jumped on my chest, pushing me backwards into a sharp, arrow-shaped panel (next tee sign), ripping my pants off. The fun part was that while I was trying to focus on my shots the other players were laughing their heads off… I played 15 and 16 with holes in my pants and my boxer shorts showing, basically looking like a total punk. We finally halved the 15th, and won on 16.

The four-ball of your dreams (living or dead)?

Justin Rose, Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy.

Part 2: ABOUT ALL SQUARE

How did you first discover All Square?
