The Best Golf Courses in Southeast Asia (2025)
Penina Hotel & Golf Resort is renowned as the home of golf in the Algarve, with a golf academy and three superb courses including the region’s first ever 18-hole layout.
This wonderful 5-star resort is set within 360 acres of grasslands in the western Algarve between the fishing village of Portimao and the historic town of Lagos, and indulges guests with high-class service, Portuguese charm and fantastic golf.
It’s the only resort in Portugal to offer three golf courses, one of which is the legendary Sir Henry Cotton Championship Course, the Algarve’s first 18-hole course which opened in 1966. Designed by the three-time British Open champion, this beautiful parkland course has a British feel and has hosted ten Portuguese Opens. The raised greens and subtle slopes of the fairways are flanked by streams and other water hazards as it weaves through beautiful woodland.
The resort is also home the Resort Course and the Academy Course, both 9-holers which can be played as 18-hole courses. The Resort Course provides a gentle introduction to the game with a variety of well-thought-out holes. It’s a par 35 and only 3,267 yards from the white tees and just 2,875 yards from the yellow tees. The Academy Course has been specifically designed for the intermediate golfer. It’s a par 30 and just 2,024 yards in length providing the perfect opportunity for short and mid-game practice.
The Penina Golf Academy is one of the best practice facilities in the region, with a pro shop, driving range, practice green, bunker and chipping areas to go with lessons and clinics with PGA professionals. Guests who book a stay & play package at Penina Hotel & Golf Resort can also enjoy access at the nearby Pinheiros Altos Golf Resort and San Lorenzo Golf Club.
Pinheiros Altos Golf features a 27-hole championship course made up of three 9-hole groupings, each a par 36, offering golfers different 18-hole combinations. Set by the Ria Formosa nature reserve, the course is also close to beautiful beaches and the Atlantic. It’s one of Europe’s most scenic rounds of golf.
San Lorenzo Golf Club is an 18-hole course located in Quinta do Lago among tall pines. Designed by American golf architect Rocky Roquemore, it’s known as one of the Algarve’s most beautiful courses. Spectacular ocean and mountain views, freshwater lagoons and over 70 local bird species adorn the manicured fairways.
Penina Hotel & Golf Resort has 196 rooms that can sleep different party sizes from one adult in the single room to four adults plus two children in the grand suite. Each room comes equipped with comfortable beds, a 32-inch flat-screen satellite TV, a bathtub with shower, in-room safe, air conditioning, and a private terrace with pool or mountain views. The resort has the Algarve’s largest private outdoor pool, a kids club with its own pool and floodlit tennis courts.
Guests at Penina get exclusive access to their own private beach area at Praia de Alvor, a vast unspoilt expanse of white sand bordered by grassy dunes and the Atlantic Ocean, along with loungers, refreshments and a free shuttle service to and from the resort.
At the beach, Penina’s Dunas Restaurant offers a selection of drinks, snacks and classic Portuguese fish dishes. Just a 10 minute walk from here is the picturesque village of Alvor, known for its charming whitewashed buildings, cobbled streets of bars and restaurants and harbour filled with fishing boats.
Penina also boasts six restaurants, offering something for everyone with both indoor and outdoor seating areas. Sagres is the main restaurant providing buffet breakfasts and dinners, Le Grill offers exclusive fine dining of gourmet international cuisine, and L’arlecchino serves Italian favourites. As well as the Dunas Beach restaurant, there’s also the Sir Henry Cotton Club for drinks and light meals after a round of golf, and Bar Monchique which serves drinks and cocktails along with live music.
