The Els Club Vilamoura: Golfing Grandeur in the Algarve

Our team caught up with Miguel Girbes, the new Director of Golf at Finca Cortesin who has been working in the golf industry for over 15 years.
When I was 16, I went to high school in California for 2 years and lived with a host family that introduced me to golf. From that moment on I engaged with the game and decided to focus my career in the golf industry.
Finca Cortesin has the perfect setting for a luxury golf getaway centered around six main areas: Award Winning Hotel, exceptional real estate, championship golf course (hosted the Volvo World Match Play Championship in 2009, 2011 & 2012), outstanding spa & sport facilities, magnificent Beach Club and an exclusive shopping area. The resort’s privileged location means that Marbella, the capital of the Costa del Sol, as well as two of the most important marinas on the Mediterranean coast, Puerto Banús and Sotogrande, are just a short drive away. Finca Cortesin is a destination that will leave you wishing you could stay forever.
In my opinion we have to create more programs for juniors, women and non-golfers to introduce them into the game. We also need to find different ways to make golf attractive for new clients to experience the game for the first time. Otherwise, it will be complicated to grow the numbers in the industry over the next 10 years.
First of all, I have to say Augusta National in the US where I have already been twice but never had a chance to play. My other two favorite courses are North Berwick in Scotland, which is one of the most enjoyable links course I have played and Finca Cortesin, which has always been one of my favorites courses, even before I joined the company.
This is hard to answer since every course has something unique to discover. I think one of the best things in golf is that you can travel the world playing different courses but you will never find the same course twice.
My favorite golf destination is Scotland. The rich history, traditions and the beautiful links courses make this destination extra special.
I admire a lot different players but if I have to choose one it would be Sergio Garcia because year after year he has proven to be on the top of the rankings. His natural talent and personality make him a different type of golfer, especially when he plays in the Ryder Cup.
