J.J. Spaun etched his name into U.S. Open history on June 15–16, 2025, at Oakmont Country Club, shooting a final-round 72 and finishing at 1‑under to claim his first major title. Despite a disastrous start — five bogeys in his first six holes, posting a front-nine 40 — Spaun rallied ferociously after a nearly 1½-hour rain delay. He carded clutch birdies at 12 and 14, then sank a 65‑foot monster putt on the 18th to seal a two-stroke victory over Robert MacIntyre.
His equipment played a critical role. Spaun leaned on a Titleist GT3 driver (Fujikura Ventus Black 6‑X), paired with a split iron set: a forgiving Srixon ZXi5 4‑iron and the sleeker ZXi7 for his 5‑PW. His bag also featured TaylorMade Qi10 fairway woods, Cleveland wedges, and a tour-favorite L.A.B. Golf DF3 zero‑torque putter — the very club that delivered that historic 64‑foot closing birdie.
Spaun’s journey to the top has been as improbable as his win. A former college walk-on at San Diego State, J.J. Spaun toiled on the PGA Tour’s developmental circuits — Gateway, Canada — before securing his first PGA Tour victory at the 2022 Valero Texas Open. This U.S. Open triumph, his second PGA Tour win and fifth pro title, not only vaults him into golf’s elite (he leaps into the world’s top 10) but confirms his resilience, mental toughness, and steady ascendancy on the Tour.
Oakmont’s fiendish layout — fast greens, brutal rough, and Church Pews bunkers — disposed of big hitters but respected Spaun’s precision and fortitude. J.J. Spaun was the only player to finish under par, thriving when others faltered. With that mastery of equipment and nerves, he’s cemented both a remarkable career milestone and an iconic U.S. Open moment.
