J.J. Spaun’s Gear: A U.S. Open Triumph at Oakmont

The Spanish Canary Island of Tenerife is the perfect place to visit for those who appreciate great golf, luxurious accommodation and amazing food. We’ve picked out some highlights right here.

On Tenerife’s west coast, the Ritz-Carlton Abama offers a 5-star experience with 459 rooms, a world-class spa, as well as the nearby Abama Golf Course. This island retreat overlooks the Atlantic Ocean and has seven outdoor pools, a tennis academy and golden sandy beach. The resort is made up of Moorish-inspired buildings housing guest rooms and villas and is set in lush tropical gardens on a cliff top. Fantastic.
Gastronomy: The hotel’s gourmet offering is world renowned. There’s Italian, Spanish, and BBQ to choose from at the 10 restaurants which include the two Michelin-starred M.B, which serves dishes created by renowned chef Martín Berasategui, and Kabuki, with one Michelin star, which offers innovative Japanese cuisine.

This wonderful accommodation option is surrounded by beautiful gardens and nestled within the Abama Golf Course with a huge outdoor pool. It’s made up of exclusive one- to four-bedroom apartments and suites, some with views of the sea and golf course, others of the gardens. Each air-conditioned option has a terrace, a dining area, living space and fully equipped kitchen.
Gastronomy: You can enjoy breakfast and dining at the on-site Melvin Restaurant which has an al fresco terrace and Spanish menu designed by Michelin starred-chef Martín Berasategui that encompasses a special selection of local products. There is also a gourmet shop offering a wide range of local artisan products and an exquisite selection of wines.

Abama Golf Club: Set high above the sea with incredible views, the luxurious Ritz Carlton Abama Resort is home to Abama Golf Club. The golf course is beautifully conditioned with endless sea views and elevated tees. Draped across natural undulations, it’s set alongside banana plantations with over 25,000 palm trees and 22 lakes and streams to offer a unique, memorable golfing experience.
his 5-star luxury hotel is for adults only (16 years and over). It has a great location in the popular resort of Playas de Las Americas on the south coast, and is set within the Las Américas golf course. There’s a world-class spa, a lovely large outdoor pool and the wonderful 44 rooms and 13 suites have panoramic views of the golf course, Atlantic Ocean and La Gomera Island. Guests get direct access at Golf Las Américas, and a free golf buggy is included with all rooms.
Gastronomy: The restaurants at Las Madrigueras offer a range of different cuisines. The Belle Vue Terrace Restaurant is a wonderful place to enjoy a light lunch, while The Bogey Restaurant offers a buffet breakfast in the morning or a delicious a la carte meal in the evening on a beautiful terrace to watch the sunset.
Golf Las Americas: This championship course is highly popular among holidaying golfers. Adjacent to the resorts of Playa de Las Americas and Los Cristianos, it might get busy particularly in high season, but the fairways and greens are in superb condition and the layout is as entertaining and varied as any course on the island.
This charming 4-star resort hotel is on the island of La Gomera, accessible from Tenerife’s North Airport, or via a ferry crossing from Los Cristianos to San Sebastian de la Gomera, the capital city, which operates daily and takes less than an hour.
Surrounded by 17 acres of beautiful sub-tropical gardens, it enjoys great views over Tenerife and Mount Teide, while Playa de Santiago Beach is within walking distance. Take a dip in one of the pools, unwind at the open-air spa, head to the 18-hole Tecina Golf Course and choose from exercise classes, tennis, squash, mini golf and pool games. The hotel has 434 rooms in total, with high-quality rooms in two-storey blocks with a balcony or terrace, or you can choose between a number of superb suites of different sizes with ocean views.

Gastronomy: There’s 11 bars and restaurants to choose from, including the Main Restaurant, where breakfasts and half-board international meals are taken, Tasca Fandango serving rustic local dishes, and La Trattoria, an upmarket Italian bistro. El Laurel is a beach-side tranquil place serving grilled meats and freshly caught seafood, and then there’s the Cave 2, the ultimate in romantic, candlelit dining in a natural cave overlooking the ocean.
Tecina Golf: This superb golf course is part of Hotel Jardin Tecina. With incredible views of the Atlantic and Tenerife, it descends on different terraces, giving it a unique stepped design. In the upper parts it feels wild and arid, before you descend to the tropical fruit trees of the lower parts. You won’t forget it.
