Boutique Golf Hotels with Personality

In the heart of Quinta do Lago, one of the Algarve’s most prestigious resort destinations, Conrad Algarve is entering a new chapter. Following an extensive programme of renovations and enhancements, the luxury resort is combining its distinctive palace-inspired architecture with warmer interiors, stronger connections to the Algarve and a renewed focus on outdoor living, dining and personalised experiences.
The transformation is not simply about refreshing individual spaces. It is about reshaping the way guests experience the resort from the moment they arrive. A redesigned entrance avenue, a warmer lobby, new social spaces, an entirely new restaurant concept and enhanced pool areas are all part of the evolution. Two new private villas are also nearing completion, adding another layer of accommodation to an already extensive offering.
For golfers, the timing is particularly interesting. Conrad Algarve sits within Quinta do Lago, surrounded by some of Portugal’s most established golf courses and close to the Ria Formosa Natural Park. With the resort itself being renewed alongside the wider destination, it offers an increasingly polished base for a golf holiday in the Algarve.

Conrad Algarve closed temporarily from 25 January to 1 March 2026 for a major refurbishment programme and reopened on 2 March. The five-week project focused on several of the resort’s most visible areas, while additional enhancements have continued as part of the property’s wider transformation.
The philosophy behind the renovation is notably regional. Rather than abandoning the hotel’s original 18th-century Portuguese palace-inspired character, the redesign aims to make it feel more contemporary, intimate and connected to its surroundings. Interior designers have introduced warmer colours, natural materials, woodwork and references to the Algarve landscape, creating a softer interpretation of the resort’s original grandeur.
That balance between heritage-inspired architecture and contemporary comfort is becoming one of the defining characteristics of the new Conrad Algarve.

The transformation begins before guests even reach the main building.
The entrance avenue has been redesigned with olive trees, replacing much of the previous planting and giving the approach a distinctly Portuguese character. New paving and water features have also changed the arrival sequence, creating a more open and tranquil transition from the road into the resort.
It is a relatively subtle change, but an important one. Olive trees are deeply associated with the Mediterranean landscape and Portuguese agricultural heritage, making the redesigned avenue feel less like a generic luxury-resort entrance and more like a deliberate introduction to the Algarve.
For a property where the sense of arrival has always been part of the experience, the new landscaping establishes the tone before guests have even stepped inside.

The iconic lobby has also undergone a significant redesign.
Previously dominated by lighter, predominantly white tones, the space now incorporates warmer colours and carved wood panelling inspired by the Algarve’s oak and cork landscapes. Artwork and tapestries introduce muted shades associated with the region’s coastline, while the redesign retains the generous natural light and spacious architecture of the original interior.

The project was handled by Irish design studio O’Donnell O’Neill, whose approach was to preserve the hotel’s existing elegance while making the arrival experience feel warmer and more comfortable.
This is perhaps the clearest example of the overall renovation philosophy: rather than replacing Conrad Algarve’s identity, the design has been used to reinterpret it.

One of the most significant additions is Oliveira Brasserie, a new all-day dining destination replacing Louro.
The contemporary European brasserie has a distinctly Portuguese heart, with its concept built around the olive and the culinary traditions of the Algarve. The restaurant flows between indoor dining and outdoor terrace areas, making it equally suited to a relaxed breakfast, long lunch or evening meal.

The design continues the property’s new regional direction. Natural textures, clay-plastered walls and locally crafted woodwork are combined with contemporary details. An olive tree at the entrance and a sculptural light inspired by the same tree reinforce the restaurant’s central theme. The layout has also been opened up to create different dining atmospheres rather than a collection of enclosed spaces.

The food follows the same philosophy. Executive Chef Benjamin Painset focuses on seasonal ingredients and local producers, while Oliveira incorporates its own blended olive oil, signature tapenade and locally sourced marinated olives.
For golfers, Oliveira also adds an appealing rhythm to a stay: breakfast before a morning tee time, a relaxed return from the course for lunch, or a Mediterranean-inspired dinner without having to leave the resort.

Another important part of the transformation is The Nest Cocktails & Bar, which has been redesigned as a more informal social destination within Conrad Algarve.
The concept extends beyond the traditional hotel bar. The Nest is intended to welcome both hotel guests and the local community, with coffee and tea during the day evolving into cocktails and food later in the evening. Its interiors combine wood, marble and warm tones, while the new pergola and terrace extend the space outdoors overlooking the infinity pool.

The Nest also illustrates an important shift in the resort’s design philosophy: rather than making every space feel formal and grand, the renovation creates smaller destinations with their own atmosphere and personality.

While Oliveira represents the new direction, Conrad Algarve has retained one of its best-known culinary experiences: Gusto by Heinz Beck.
The Michelin-starred restaurant continues to showcase Mediterranean cuisine under the creative direction of Heinz Beck, the three-Michelin-starred chef behind the concept. It provides a distinctly different dining proposition from Oliveira, giving the resort both a relaxed all-day brasserie and a more formal gastronomic experience.

This contrast is important to the renovation story. The objective is not to replace everything familiar with something new. Instead, new concepts are being added around established experiences that already define Conrad Algarve.

The renovation extends outside as well.
The areas around the pools have been expanded with additional space for loungers, new pergolas and daybeds. A new octagonal-shaped bar near the Sereno pool is also part of the outdoor transformation, combining marble details with a lighter, more relaxed aesthetic.

This emphasis on outdoor space makes particular sense in the Algarve, where the climate encourages guests to spend much of the day outside. It also complements the golf experience: after several hours on the course, the resort provides a natural place to slow down rather than immediately moving indoors.
The renovation programme goes beyond the main hotel.
Conrad Algarve is also close to completing two new private villas, designed to expand the accommodation options available to guests and add another level of privacy to the resort experience.
Their addition is particularly significant for families, groups and guests looking for a more residential style of luxury. Instead of simply adding more rooms to the existing hotel inventory, the villas introduce a different way of staying within the resort environment.
As the wider property continues to evolve, these residences are expected to complement the existing accommodation portfolio rather than replace it, giving Conrad Algarve another option for larger or more private stays.

The existing hotel offers 154 rooms and suites, comprising 134 rooms and 20 suites, including two signature accommodation options: the Conrad Suite and the Infinity Penthouse.
The standout is the Infinity Penthouse, a 5,186-square-foot (480-square-metre) residence designed as an entire private world within the resort. Its distinctive features include a private infinity pool, a large terrace, private wellness facilities and dedicated access arrangements.

The penthouse has also maintained an impressive awards record. It won Portugal’s Leading Hotel Suite at the World Travel Awards in 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025, and remains among the nominees for the 2026 title.
That consistency is notable because the current renovation programme is not about reinventing the hotel’s most recognisable luxury offering. Instead, the surrounding resort is being brought up to the same level of sophistication.

Golf may be one of the biggest reasons to visit Quinta do Lago, but the resort is also designed for time away from the course.
The Conrad Spa covers approximately 1,800 square metres and has previously received recognition at the World Luxury Spa Awards, including Best Luxury Resort Spa in Portugal in 2024.

For golfers, that creates a natural complement to the sporting side of a trip. A morning round can be followed by time around the pools or in the spa, while non-golfing guests have plenty of reasons to enjoy the resort independently.
The result is a property that works particularly well for mixed groups, couples and families where not everyone wants to spend every day on the fairways.

The location remains one of Conrad Algarve’s strongest advantages.
The resort is situated in Quinta do Lago, close to the Ria Formosa Natural Park and the Atlantic beaches, and approximately 20 minutes from Faro International Airport.
For golfers, the immediate attraction is Quinta do Lago’s three 18-hole courses: North, South and Laranjal. Together they provide 54 holes with three noticeably different playing environments.

The North Course was redesigned by Beau Welling in collaboration with former European Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley, while the South Course was designed by William Mitchell and has hosted the Portuguese Open multiple times. Laranjal takes its name from the orange grove that once occupied the site and is characterised by lakes, umbrella pines, cork oaks and orange trees.
Conrad Algarve also has a dedicated golf concierge and PGA-qualified professional, helping guests arrange tee times, lessons and golf experiences across the Algarve.

That makes the resort particularly well positioned for travellers who want their accommodation to be more than simply a place to sleep between rounds.

The renovation also fits into a broader move towards more destination-focused experiences.
Conrad Algarve offers curated activities under its Algarve Enrichment programme, including 4×4 cork routes, clam picking and oyster tasting, visits to Loulé Market with the chef, winemaker experiences, olive-oil tastings, boat trips and vintage-car excursions.
These experiences complement the new design direction particularly well. The renovation repeatedly brings the Algarve into the property through its materials, food, landscaping and social spaces, while the experiences allow guests to discover those same themes outside the resort.
The result is a stay that can move naturally between golf, gastronomy, nature and local culture.

For golfers planning an Algarve escape, the renewed Conrad Algarve offers a particularly complete proposition.
The hotel combines 154 rooms and suites, two signature suites, multiple dining concepts, a large spa, extensive outdoor areas and a dedicated golf concierge, all within a short transfer from Faro Airport. Its location in Quinta do Lago puts three 18-hole courses within the immediate golfing landscape, while other Algarve courses are easily accessible for those wanting to build a wider itinerary.
The latest renovation adds another dimension: the resort itself becomes part of the holiday rather than simply the base between tee times.
For a destination where golf, sunshine, gastronomy and outdoor living naturally belong together, the renewed Conrad Algarve is embracing exactly that combination — with a distinctly more Portuguese sense of place.
