Imagine standing on the first tee beneath a star-filled sky, with illuminated fairways stretching into the darkness and the distant glow of a city skyline on the horizon. The sun has disappeared, but your round of golf is only just beginning.
Night golf is transforming the way golfers experience the game, offering everything from championship courses illuminated by powerful floodlights to relaxed evening rounds on shorter layouts. In destinations such as Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Qatar and Turkey, playing after sunset is more than a novelty. It provides an escape from the daytime heat and an opportunity to enjoy world-class golf in an entirely different atmosphere.
Whether you’re looking for a full 18-hole challenge or a quick nine holes after dinner, here are some of the world’s most interesting destinations for golf after dark.

Few places capture the appeal of night golf quite like the Faldo Course at Emirates Golf Club. Designed by six-time major champion Nick Faldo, this par-72 championship layout is one of Dubai’s most distinctive golfing experiences.
Originally opened as The Wadi in 1996, the course was redesigned by Faldo and relaunched in 2006. Its rolling fairways, strategic bunkering and water hazards provide an enjoyable challenge during the day, but the atmosphere changes dramatically after sunset.
The entire 18-hole course is illuminated by modern LED floodlights, allowing golfers to follow their shots against the backdrop of Dubai’s skyscrapers. The lighting system was upgraded in 2019, with the club reporting energy savings of approximately 60% compared with its previous installation.
The Faldo Course also offers dedicated evening golf experiences, including nine-hole sessions designed for players looking to combine golf with a social night out.

Located in the Mediterranean resort destination of Belek, Carya Golf Club has earned a special place in golf history as Europe’s first fully floodlit 18-hole golf course.
Designed by five-time Open Championship winner Peter Thomson and his design team, Carya takes inspiration from traditional English heathland courses, featuring sandy terrain, tree-lined fairways and strategically positioned bunkers.
Its extensive floodlighting system makes it possible to play all 18 holes after sunset. The lights are installed high enough for golfers to track the flight of their balls, creating an experience remarkably close to daytime golf.
The opportunity is particularly appealing during Turkey’s warmer summer months, when evening temperatures can make a round more comfortable. Golfers can also combine their stay with the luxury accommodation and facilities at nearby Regnum resorts. Both nine-hole and 18-hole floodlit rounds are offered, with green fees varying by season.

The striking falcon-shaped clubhouse at Abu Dhabi Golf Club is already one of the most recognisable landmarks in Middle Eastern golf. After dark, it becomes an even more impressive sight.
The club’s National Course, designed by Peter Harradine, is a championship layout measuring approximately 7,600 yards from the back tees. Its combination of desert scenery, water hazards and demanding greens has helped establish Abu Dhabi as a major international golf destination.
For evening golfers, the back nine of the National Course is fully illuminated, offering a par-36 championship experience extending approximately 3,696 yards. The 18th hole provides a particularly memorable finish, with the illuminated Falcon Clubhouse overlooking the closing stretch.
The club has also offered a floodlit nine-hole Garden Course, giving golfers another option for a shorter evening round.

At Education City Golf Club in Doha, night golf is designed to be accessible to experienced players, beginners and families alike.
Opened in 2019, the facility features 33 holes designed by two-time Masters champion José María Olazábal. While its 18-hole championship course is not floodlit, golfers can enjoy evening play on a six-hole championship course and a nine-hole par-3 layout.
The six-hole course provides a shorter championship-style experience, while the par-3 course is especially appealing for beginners, families and golfers looking to sharpen their short game.
Education City also features an advanced training centre and TrackMan-equipped practice facilities, making it an excellent destination for combining lessons, practice and evening golf.

Another excellent destination for after-dark golf is Doha Golf Club, one of the region’s established golfing venues.
The club is best known for its Peter Harradine-designed 18-hole championship course, which has a long association with the Qatar Masters. However, its floodlit nine-hole Academy Course provides an alternative for golfers who prefer playing in the evening.
With illuminated holes and a more approachable layout than the championship course, the Academy Course is well suited to a relaxed round after exploring Doha. Its location near West Bay, The Pearl and Lusail makes it particularly convenient for visitors staying in the capital.
Unlike facilities where floodlights illuminate only the driving range, Doha Golf Club allows golfers to enjoy actual course play well into the evening.

For golfers seeking an accessible and informal night golf experience, The Track, Meydan Golf is an excellent choice.
Designed by Peter Harradine, this fully floodlit nine-hole, par-36 course measures 3,667 yards from the back tees. The layout winds around six natural lakes, with water coming into play on every hole and spectacular views of the Dubai skyline.
Unlike many traditional golf clubs, The Track operates on a pay-and-play basis, meaning visitors do not need a membership. The club also takes a relaxed approach to dress codes, making it particularly welcoming to newcomers.
Night golf is available into the late evening, with floodlights illuminating not only the course but also the driving range, putting green and short-game practice areas. Its combination of convenience, challenging holes and city views makes it an appealing choice for an evening round.

Although modern floodlighting can make a golf course appear almost as bright as during the day, playing after sunset introduces several interesting challenges.
Under artificial lighting, judging distances and following the ball against the dark sky can feel different. Bunkers cast unusual shadows, putting greens can appear flatter or more undulating than expected, and familiar holes take on a completely new character.
Temperature is another important consideration. In destinations such as Dubai, Doha and Belek, evening rounds can offer relief from intense daytime heat, although conditions may still be warm and humid.
There is also a distinctive social atmosphere. Many floodlit facilities offer shorter rounds, making night golf particularly attractive to travellers, busy professionals and groups of friends who want to enjoy the sport without dedicating an entire afternoon to it.

A little preparation can make your first night golf experience significantly more enjoyable.
Choose a course with proper fairway lighting rather than one that illuminates only its practice facilities. Arriving before sunset allows you to familiarise yourself with the surroundings, warm up and adjust to changing light conditions.
Brightly coloured or highly visible golf balls may help you identify your ball on the ground, although standard white balls are often easy to follow under quality floodlights. It is also worth paying closer attention to yardage markers and GPS devices, as judging distances visually may be more difficult.
Before booking, check whether the entire course is illuminated or only certain holes. Some clubs provide full 18-hole evening experiences, while others offer nine-hole rounds or shorter academy layouts. Lighting schedules, latest tee times and night golf surcharges can vary by season.

Night golf is demonstrating that the traditional sunrise-to-sunset golfing schedule is no longer the only option.
Advances in LED lighting have made floodlit courses more practical, improving visibility while reducing electricity consumption compared with older lighting technologies. Emirates Golf Club’s lighting upgrade is one example of how modern systems can combine an enjoyable playing experience with greater energy efficiency.
Although illuminating an entire championship course requires significant investment, shorter floodlit layouts offer another way for clubs to extend playing hours and welcome new audiences.
From Dubai’s illuminated skyscrapers to Turkey’s Mediterranean fairways and Qatar’s modern golf academies, playing after dark offers something that traditional daytime golf cannot quite replicate: the excitement of a familiar game in an extraordinary new setting.
For golfers looking to add a memorable experience to their next holiday, a round under the lights deserves a place on the itinerary.
