Austin Smotherman finally reached the breakthrough moment he had been chasing for years at the 2026 Bank of Utah Championship. Playing at Black Desert Resort in Utah, the Californian produced an outstanding four-round performance of 63-62-65-68 to finish 26-under par and claim his first PGA Tour title. His 258 total set a new tournament scoring record, while a two-shot victory over Doug Ghim capped a week in which Smotherman combined impressive ball striking with a confident short game. The win came in his 100th PGA Tour start, making it an especially memorable milestone in his professional career.

Smotherman arrived in Utah with plenty of momentum after a strong 2026 season that had already included a runner-up finish at the Cognizant Classic and a T8 at The American Express. At Black Desert Resort, his performance was backed by a remarkably well-rounded statistical week: he finished seventh in driving distance, second in greens in regulation, T-11 in scrambling and sixth in putts per green in regulation. His winning setup included a Titleist GT3 driver, TaylorMade Qi10 3-wood and a TaylorMade hybrid, followed by Titleist T100 irons from 4-iron through 9-iron. At the other end of the bag, he relied on Titleist Vokey wedges and an L.A.B. Golf VZN.1i putter.

The victory represents a significant step in a career that began after Smotherman turned professional in 2016 following his college career at SMU. He worked his way through PGA Tour Latinoamérica and the Korn Ferry Tour, where he collected three victories, before establishing himself on the PGA Tour. After finishing third in the 2025 Korn Ferry Tour points standings, he returned to the PGA Tour with renewed momentum in 2026. Now a PGA Tour winner, Smotherman has added an important chapter to his career — and his winning bag offers an interesting mix of modern technology and trusted equipment, including a hybrid that has been in his setup for several years.
