Best Golf Resorts in Southeastern Europe
Arabella Golf resort in Mallorca is a sunny haven for golfers, with four manicured golf courses and two five-star hotels in a gorgeous natural setting close to Palma.
With over 300 days of sunshine a year, the largest of the Mediterranean Balearic islands has great food, wonderful beaches and golf courses, and the capital Palma is steeped in historic charm. Arabella Golf is the largest golf resort on the island.
It’s situated in the exclusive Son Vida residential complex, just 10 minutes from Palma city centre. The resort has three 18-hole parkland courses and a 9-hole course. The hotel options and excellent golf courses make Arabella the perfect choice for a luxurious and sunny golf vacation.
The Son Vida course is the oldest and most famous course in Mallorca, designed by Fred Hawtree in the early 60s and redesigned by Kurt Rossknecht in 2001. It’s got a traditional feel and there’s stunning views over the Bay of Palma and the Sierra de Tramuntana. It twice hosted the Balearic Open on the European Tour, including in 1990 when it was won by Seve Ballesteros. It’s hilly and strategic with elevated greens and wide fairways. The signature 6th hole unveils captivating views of Palma Bay from an elevated position, creating a truly remarkable experience.
The Son Muntaner course hosted the Mallorca Golf Open in 2022 and is ideal for a challenging round in a beautiful setting, with wide fairways, well-maintained hour-glass greens and pretty water hazards. It’s a championship-standard course and was designed in 2001 by Kurt Rossknecht. It’s one of the best courses on the island, and on the 15th hole golfers will discover ‘Na Capitana’, the 1000-year old olive tree, unique on the island.
The Golf Son Quint course, designed by Ramon Espinosa and Kurt Rossknecht, is perched high on a hillside, providing splendid views. Nowhere more so than standing on the 8th tee box where you will see the Bay of Palma and the Old Town’s cathedral. A wide range of native vegetation gives you the feeling of an authentic Mediterranean atmosphere at this modern and elegant course.
The 9-hole Palma Pitch & Putt course is another lovely looking course and all holes are par 3, so it’s a great place for beginners. It’s the only official pitch and putt course on the island, and those new to the game will enjoy the variety of holes. A guaranteed fun few hours of golf.
Finally, the Arabella Golf Academy offers guests everything they need to improve their game, from tuition for kids, teens and adults from PGA professionals, to club fitting and Trackman analysis.
The resort offers a complimentary shuttle bus service between each course as well as its two resident hotels, the Sheraton Mallorca Arabella Golf Hotel and the Castillo Hotel Son Vida.
Sheraton Mallorca Arabella Golf Hotel – This hotel has 93 rooms and suites designed to suit modern lives set in a Spanish mansion. A premium choice for golfers, Golf Son Vida’s 18th hole is just a short distance away, while its fairways weave seamlessly with the hotel grounds to create an evergreen and lush environment.
There’s a tapas restaurant open for lunch and dinner and fine local Mediterranean cuisine at the Es Carbo, one of Mallorca’s best restaurants with a beautiful terrace. There’s a swimming pool, gym, luxury spa, sauna and steam bath. The new Arabella Kids & Tweens Club awaits to welcome young guests. There’s loads of activities including tennis, volleyball and bike riding.
Castillo Hotel Son Vida – This adults only 16+ hotel is right next to the golf course Golf Son Vida. It was originally built in the 13th century and is surrounded by outdoor swimming pools, subtropical lush gardens and incredible views of the Bay of Palma. It has 164 rooms and suites, and the Son Vida Spa, opened in 2018, is a haven of wellness featuring exclusive products and treatments. It’s also a dining destination with an inspired range of restaurants, from the fine-dining El Castell to the chic Pool Bar.
The St. Regis Mardavall Mallorca – Guests at this excellent five-star hotel, around 10 minutes away from Arabella resort, are entitled to special green fee rates and caddy services at Son Vida, Son Mutaner and Son Quint golf courses. Private shuttle service and luxury transfers can also be arranged.
This relaxing retreat is perched between cliffs and Puerto Portals harbour in immaculate gardens facing the Mediterranean. It’s arranged across four terracotta buildings, with the 125 rooms and suites all having large private terraces with ocean views. The superb Arabella spa is one of the largest in the Mediterranean, and Es Fum restaurant boasts a Michelin star.
