The Best Mountain Golf Courses in Europe

Blessed with the beauty of nature’s best palette, the scenery of Cyprus unfolds across glittering coasts, rolling mountains, fragrant forests and rugged headlands. One thing’s for sure wherever you are on the island: the naturally warm Cypriot hospitality is much in evidence.
With a glorious year-round Mediterranean climate, stunning scenery and a small but superb range of courses, it’s easy to see why golf in Cyprus is so popular. Located in some of the most picturesque areas of Cyprus, the select handful of courses have been applauded for the way they are integrated into the breathtaking natural landscape of dramatic ravines, cliffs and sea vistas – backdrops that have been carefully used to enhance the game on each course.
Aphrodite Hills is a course with great pedigree. It was designed by the world-famous architect Cabell Robinson and, as a result, has an American feel to it. The skill of the architect is most evident in his ability to fit 18 championship standard holes onto this unique plot of land.
In June 2017, the golf course began a €2.5 million renovation process. This will see an overhaul and reconstruction of the bunkers and the greens. The scale of this renovation is unprecedented at Aphrodite Hills but will result in a significant modernisation of the course.
Situated in the grounds of a twelfth century monastery, Minthis Hills Golf Club was the first club to open in Cyprus. With its serene setting and mesmerising mountain views the course continues to remain a favourite for visitors to the island.
The course meanders its way through ancient gardens, with each hole surrounded by grapevines, walnut, almond, and olive trees. With many of the holes played from elevated tees towards narrow landing areas, flanked either by mature greenery or water features, the immaculate course poses a challenge for golfers of all abilities. Nestled in the hills, 550m above sea level, a cool sea breeze sweeps across the course year-round, creating the perfect oasis away from the searing Cypriot summers.
The world-class Eléa Golf Club, part of the prestigious Eléa Estate, commands a breathtaking location alongside the shimmering eastern Mediterranean and the ancient town of Pafos, just 8 km from Pafos International Airport.
Eléa is acknowledged as designer Sir Nick Faldo’s ‘Mediterranean Masterpiece’. At 6,900 yards from the black tees, the golf course commands a striking location above the Mediterranean Sea and has been meticulously crafted through rolling countryside, featuring imposing weathered outcrops of limestone that offer a unique character across the course.
Nestled in a scenic valley in Pafos, Secret Valley Golf Club offers a stunning setting with a friendly, relaxed atmosphere and sheer playability. With the course carefully laid out in the natural landscape, and with mature vegetation in the lower part of the valley, the setting is distinctly a Cyprus one with a unique Mediterranean feel. Utilizing the steep hillside terrain, the course offers spectacular tee locations and long views towards valley and ocean.
