Scottie Scheffler heeded Rory McIlroy’s putter advice and has now earned his sixth PGA Tour title at the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill. Here’s his club set-up.
The world No. 1 made the change to his choice of putter in the lead up to the tournament. Putting is the one part of his game that he has struggled with and even Rory McIlroy had said changing to a more forgiving mallet might be the answer for Scheffler.
“For me, going to a mallet was a big change. So I’d love to see Scottie try a mallet,” McIlroy said during the recent Genesis Invitational.
The change saw an instant improvement. Scheffler carded a final-round 66 to secure a dominant victory on 15 under – five shots clear of runner-up Wyndham Clark with Shane Lowry in third on nine under. McIlroy carded a 76 to finish on one under in T21.
For the tournament he ranked fifth for the week in strokes Gained: Putting, finishing in the top five of this metric for just the third time in his career.
Scheffler was a user of blade putters before he started working with putting instructor Phil Kenyon last autumn. He played for a long time with a Scotty Cameron Special Select Timeless Tourtype blade, but then began experimenting with various putter designs around the middle of 2023.
He used a TaylorMade Spider Tour X SS prototype mallet and a wider-bodied Scotty Cameron blade before switching to a Logan Olson prototype blade.
The new Taylormade Spider Tour X mallet putter went in the bag at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and he now has his second red cardigan sweater.
The putter is a half-inch longer than his previous putter and has an L-Neck hosel and True Path alignment aid with a full-line sight line on top. He switched to the club for increased moment of inertia, a measure of a club’s stability and forgiveness. The putter has 3 degrees of loft and a 72-degree lie angle.
Also used by McIlroy, the Spider X was originally designed to convert golfers from blade putters to mallets, using a compact shape and modern look while delivering blade-like feel with the benefits of alignment and forgiveness.
The weights in this model are placed further forward, generating more face rotation and a CG that is 33mm from the face. This model has MOI of 5,000 and 30 degrees of toe hang on a small slant hosel.

The PGA Tour stays in Florida for The Players next week. Scheffler will be back as defending champion while McIlroy will be hoping for a second victory at TPC Sawgrass.
